Introducing Gascony

A civilised place to live

“Ask many of the several hundred Britons living in Gascony why they chose to settle in this gloriously untouched part of South West France and be prepared for a long list of reasons,” says Ian Purslow of Purslow’s Gascony which was established in 1990.

“For many it is the wonderful, gentle countryside with easy roads and little traffic; for some it’s the regional food and wines that make living here a pleasure. The regular flights to Britain from Toulouse, Pau & Bordeaux are certainly a plus and the price of property – with fine family houses, many with land and pools, priced from 450,000 to 950,000 euros and good cottages from around 350,000 euros – is an obvious attraction. Here one can even realise the dream of owning a chateau, such properties are sometimes available for the same price as a small country house in Britain’s Home Counties!

“But what nearly everyone agrees upon is that Gascons are the most welcoming, courteous and hospitable people to have as neighbours. They are invariably helpful and the majority of our buyers are overwhelmed by their welcome here”.

Gascony, a favourite area of France

Ian Purslow and his family came to Gascony some 20 years ago attracted by this beguiling part of France. Ian established Purslow’s Gascony, a residential agency which specialises in selling properties in The Department of Gers in the heart of the region ranging in price from around 450,000 to in excess of 2 million euros. A good proportion of his sales are to English-speaking buyers although the region is also popular with other European nationals.

“We were among earlier settlers when we came to live in Gascony,” says Ian who is married with children who were born in France and who go to local schools. “With my background in overseas property I believed that this area would have immense appeal to British buyers. The countryside is reminiscent of some of the best parts of the British Isles but the weather is kinder with spring coming earlier, a hot and sunny Summer (yet rarely so hot as to be uncomfortable unlike some parts of the Med) and a warm and long Autumn. There is no prevailing wind and winter can often surprise with a string of warm and sunny days - we have even eaten outside on December 25th! In addition the region is uncrowded, unpolluted and virtually crime-free. Gascony remains our favourite area of France and I have taken dual British-French nationality such is my passion for the area and its people.

A third of our properties go to buyers who intend to live in their French home full time

“Today there are a good number of Britons living here – but not so many that you feel that you are living back in the U.K. About a third of our properties go to buyers who intend to live in their French home full time, a third as holiday homes and a third to people who will use them as a second home now but with the intention of spending considerably more time here in the future. There is a good letting season from around May until mid September as well as Easter and Christmas/New Year. Properties with gîtes – separate guest accommodation - which can be let out to earn an income to help with costs are another option. Our buyers range from younger professionals looking for second homes to older people wanting a place to retire to - their purchasing power being much stronger in this area!”

There is no shortage of things to do when visiting or living in Gascony – there are many wonderful lakes for swimming; a number of delightfully relaxed golf courses, superb horse riding and fishing or – a little further afield – there are the ski resorts of the Pyrenees and the beaches on the French Atlantic coast. But for some, simply exploring the historic towns and sampling the excellent fresh, local produce, is enough.

“We can no longer describe Gascony as an undiscovered gem but nevertheless a gem it remains,” says Ian Purslow. “The countryside has echoes of parts of the U.K. so British buyers feel at home here. Most love the fact that it remains peaceful and unspoilt and still traditionally French. In many ways you could describe Gascony as the Britain we used to know, less busy and less materialistic.

Purslow’s Gascony offer a wide range of properties for sale in the Gers and sometimes going into the neighbouring departments of Tarn-et-Garonne, Lot-et-Garonne, Haute-Garonne, Haute-Pyrénées and Pyrénées-Atlantiques.
